The Science and Technology Entry Program

Minority groups are severely underrepresented in professional education and the licensed professions in New York, as well as throughout the nation. The Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) was launched in 1985 to help give young students of minority groups a better chance at entering these fields by enhancing their education early on. Since its inception, this program has been responsible for providing supplemental education experience, career counseling, and role modeling to students in grades 7 through 12 throughout New York State.

During the normal school year, STEP provides an additional enrichment program, which is held on Saturdays at Columbia University’s Learning Center. During summer recess, STEP students attend special classes Monday through Thursday and field trips on Friday.

STEP allows students from minority groups to enhance their knowledge of such vital subjects as science, English, and math and offers them special training with computers and PRE-SAT and SAT classes. Their classroom experience is assessed regularly, and it is enhanced with field trips to cultural, scientific, and technical facilities.

STEP is open to students who are economically disadvantaged (as defined by New York State guidelines) or a member of a minority historically underrepresented in the scientific, technical, and health professions.
