America Reads"This program helps children in underserved communities have equal footing with children in other communities around the country," says Nira Dwivedi00, a third-year student of the School of Dental and Oral Surgery. Ms. Dwivedi is describing America Reads, a federally funded project with the goal of improving the reading skills of children in elementary school. Students from all Health Sciences schools volunteer their time to work with children from P.S. 128, an elementary school located on West 169th Street. Ms. Dwivedi and other students meet with three children on Saturdays between 9 a.m. and noon at the Hammer Health Sciences Center. They spend one hour with each child, assisting them with reading, science, and virtually any subject or project where help is needed. "One of the kids I tutor did not know how to tell time," Ms. Dwivedi recalls. "After explaining it to him, he could look at a clock and tell his mom what time it was. Even though it was something small, I felt really good about it. I think every tutor comes away with something positive." For more information, contact: Eva Matos |
