The Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine started in 1993 with a 5-year grant from The Rosenthal Foundation. In 1995, the center received a grant from the Office of Alternative Medicine, at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), one of 10 chosen pilot research centers. The Rosenthal Center was funded "to assess the state of alternative medicine research in women's health, and conduct initial research to lead to larger studies." In 1999, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) at NIH refunded the Rosenthal center to include an expanded role as the Center for CAM Research in Aging and Women's Health. The Rosenthal Center has received multiple grants and donations for a range of projects, courses and events, including a generous grant from the Lerner Foundation to create the Carol Ann Schwartz Cancer Education Initiative, featured on the Home Page of the web site. The Lerner Foundation funded the center's annual lecture series. In 2003, the Rosenthal Center was successful in obtaining funding from NCCAM, NIH, to establish a collaborative Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine and Women's Health at Fudan University in Shanghai, China. Key collaborating institutions were The University of Hong Kong, and the University of Milan-Bicocca.
