Theodore B. VanItallie, M.D.


Theodore B. VanItallie, M.D. Theodore B. VanItallie, M.D., researcher, teacher, and clinician in the fields of metabolism and nutrition, is Professor Emeritus of Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and an honorary member of the Board of Trustees of St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center.

After receiving his S.B. degree at Harvard University in 1941, Dr. VanItallie earned an M.D. at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1945 and completed a medical residency at St. Luke's. He then spent two years in fellowship training at the Department of Nutrition at Harvard and the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. In 1955, he was appointed an assistant professor at Harvard's Schools of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. VanItallie returned to St. Luke's two years later as its first full-time director of medicine.

In the late 1950s Dr. VanItallie collaborated in the formation of an Institute of Nutrition Sciences at Columbia, which later became the Institute of Human Nutrition. In connection with this new affiliation, major research facilities were constructed at St. Luke's. The Division of Metabolism and Nutrition became a clinical investigative and teaching arm of the Institute.

Dr. VanItallie was later instrumental in developing a complete academic affiliation between St. Luke's and Columbia University. In 1975, he became the director of the newly formed Obesity Research Center.

He was a founder of the American Society of Clinical Nutrition and has served as its president and as editor of its journal.

Dr. VanItallie has been the recipient of many honors, including the FDA Commissioner's Special Citation, the McCollum Award for Distinguished Research in Clinical Nutrition, and the Goldberger Award in Clinical Nutrition from the American Medical Association. In 1986, he was elected to Fellowship in the American Institute of Nutrition, and he received the New York chapter award for Distinguished Service in Internal Medicine from the American College of Physicians in 1987.
