The Look AHEAD Project

The Look AHEAD Project is a landmark, multiple-year clinical investigation of how weight loss effects the rate of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular disease in men and women who are overweight and have type 2 diabetes. The study receives funding from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). F. Xavier Pi-Sunyer, MD, Chief, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition, and Director of the Obesity Research Center at St. Lukeís-Roosevelt Hospital Center, is national co-principal investigator of this 16-site landmark study, as well as the principal investigator for the St. Lukeís-Roosevelt site.

About 5,000 volunteers are needed to participate in Look AHEAD nationwide. You may be eligible if you are 45 to 75 years old, have type 2 diabetes, and are overweight or obese. If you are eligible to participate you will be assigned at random to one of two four-year programs: the Lifestyle Program (intensive diet and exercise) or the Diabetes Support and Education Program (educational sessions on nutrition and physical activity with support group options), and then be followed for up to seven and a half more years. During this time, you will receive at no cost: physical exams and medical tests; glucose meters, strips and related supplies; sharing of exam/test results with your doctor (with your permission). All participants will benefit from ongoing diabetes education and support; the Lifestyle Program participants will receive intensive long-term personal support from doctors, counselors, and diabetes educators.

Ý ìObesity in America is a serious risk factor for a number of diseases and conditions, diabetes especially,î says Dr. Pi-Sunyer. ìThis study will help us understand the effects of weight loss on diabetes and many other disorders.î
