Dr.  Andranik Ovassapian  came to Columbia on  Thursday, September 10th, 2009 to give the Allen Hyman History Lecture.  The night before a dinner was held at The Carlyle to honor Dr. Ovassapian.

After the lecture, Dr. Ovassapian conducted an Airway Workshop for our Anesthesia Residents.

We are proud to announce that Dr. Gebhard Wagener and Dr. HT Lee as his mentor and co-investigator won an award – The ILTS Rising Star at the recently held ILTS meeting in New York  Dr. Wagener and Dr. Lee received this award for studying a novel biomarker for renal injury, urinary NGAL profile, in patients undergoing liver transplantation.  The photograph below shows Dr. Wagener receiving the award, his mentor and co-investigator Dr. HT Lee with Dr. Ronald W. Honors/Awards:

Michael L. Weinberger, M.D. was selected to the prestigious New York Magazine “Best Doctor” List in the specialty of Pain Medicine.
Dr. Weinberger has been on this list for many years, but it’s terrific to see him on the list yet again this year!

 

The Division Welcomes Two New Faculty Members:

David Bandola, M.D.
A native to North Jersey graduated from Princeton University with a degree in Biology. Upon completion of his undergraduate degree he attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he obtained both degrees in Medicine and Dentistry. He then completed an internship in General Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He received additional training at New York Presbyterian Hospital –Columbia University Campus, where he completed a residency in Anesthesiology and a fellowship in Pain Medicine During his fellowship, Dr. Bandola was a visiting fellow at the MD Andersen Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, where he was able to expand upon his interventional skills and management of pain associated with malignant disease.
Dr. Bandola joined the faculty of the Department of Anesthesiology, Division of Pain Medicine at New Columbia University in August of 2008 as an Assistant Professor. He practices all aspects of Pain Medicine. He has a special interest in sports related pain syndromes as well as Interventional Procedures including Kyphoplasty, Intradiscal Procedures, and Implantable Devices and Spinal Cord Stimulators.

Anis Dizdarevic, M.D.
Graduated from Hartwick College with a degree in Biochemistry. He then attended Harvard Medical School earning his MD, in June of 2003. He received additional training at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, completing a Residency in Anesthesiology and a Fellowship in Interventional Pain Medicine.
Dr. Dizdarevic joined the faculty of the Department of Anesthesiology, Division of Pain Medicine at Columbia University in August of 2008 where he is an Assistant Professor. He practices all aspects of Acute and Chronic Pain Medicine. He has a special interest in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, Cancer Pain, Neck Pain/Radicular pain/Whiplash injuries, Headache and Interventional Procedures including Radiofrequency Lesioning, Kyphoplasty, Discography, and Implantable Devices (Pain pumps and spinal cord stimulators).
He also performs regional anesthesia in the orthopedic and associated operating rooms. .

Update on Interventional Procedures:
In July of 2008 the Pain Center space at Presbyterian Hospital was updated with the installation of the Siemens Arcadia Orbic 3D online imaging system and a motorized carbon fiber pain management OR table.
In addition to the full-complement of common Acute and Chronic pain syndromes the Pain Medicine team treats Sports Related Injuries, Complex Regional Pain Syndromes as well as Cancer Pain

Newer Procedures being offered include:

  • Kyphoplasty /Vertbroplasty

(For the treatment of osteoporotic and cancer related compression fractures)

  • Provocative Discography
  • Intrathecal pump Trials and Placements
  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • Celiac Plexus Blocks
  • Spinal Cord Stimulator Trials and Placements
  • Interventional procedures for cancer pain including, Sympathetic Neurolytic Blocks

Planning to add functional discography and biacuplasty.

The Pain Team is also leading the hospital effort in development of the Palliative Care Consult Service.

Laurent G. Glance, M.D., Vice-Chair for Research within the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine was a visiting professor on May 13th -14th serving as this year’s endowed visiting professor for the Virginia Apgar Society. Dr. Glance moderated an “Afternoon with the Apgars” during which Drs. Neil Gleason, Laurence Ring, Christopher Gay, Elena Reitman and Julia Sobol gave oral presentations summarizing their Apgar experiences. The 15 attending Apgar scholars benefited from Dr. Glance’s insights regarding careers as developing physician-scientists. Dr. Glance also delivered the endowed Virginia Apgar Lecture at departmental grand rounds entitled “Health Care Report Cards: Report on the Report Cards”

Columbia Anesthesiology Residents Travel the World!

Dr. Kiran V. Patel has been awarded a very competitive and prestigious Society for Education in Anesthesia – Health Volunteers Overseas Traveling Fellowship for the upcoming academic year. She will receive the Ronald L. Katz Scholarship. She was one of 43 applicants from 28 different programs who applied for the fellowship. She will spend four weeks teaching anesthesia to students in anesthesia in either Tanzania, Peru, Vietnam or India. This fellowship provides a wonderful opportunity for U.S. Anesthesia Residents to see first-hand how anesthesia services are provided and to teach anesthesia to students in overseas countries.

Residents in our program who have previously received this fellowship award have been: John Tsai, Jesse Raiten, Matthew Doane and Jessica Kenaston.
