Students will spend the first two weeks in general surgery areas, "one on one" with a senior anesthesia resident. There they will have the opportunity to place "lines" for invasive hemodynamic monitoring, manage the airway, and perform any specialized techniques the cases may need. After that the student will rotate through the subspecialties, spending several days in each to see and participate in the care of patients in those areas. There will be didactic sessions once per week where students are expected to present short topics in anesthesia that they have researched through the literature. At the end of the rotation students are asked to do a longer presentation on a topic in anesthesia of particular interest to them. Neither weekend nor night call is required. The rotation is offered August through April. Please submit applications through the Dean's Office (212-305-1642) before making contact with the Course Director, Dr. Saundra Curry for permission to take the course, via email sc42@columbia.edu. Students may also contact individual attendings in the department to set up special electives. However, all must be cleared through the Dean’s office. The Department also offers a one month subinternship in Cardiothoracic and Surgical Intensive Care (ASO3P) under the guidance of Dr. Robert N. Sladen. Saundra Curry, M.D.
